The ReVox A77 is considered a milestone in the history of audio technology. In the late 1960s, it brought Studer-Revox worldwide fame and set new standards in sound quality, craftsmanship, and versatility.
The ReVox A77 was introduced in 1967 and replaced the successful predecessor model ReVox A36. From the beginning, it set new standards: It combined state-of-the-art electronics with a robust yet elegant design. Particularly noteworthy was the interior: It no longer contained tubes, but exclusively transistor technology – a novelty for that time.
Between 1967 and 1977, the A77 was produced in several variants and continuously developed. During this time, over 450,000 units were sold, making it one of the most successful tape recorders ever. The original selling price ranged from 1,500 to 3,000 Swiss francs, depending on the model and features, which would correspond to an amount of about 4,000 to 8,000 CHF today, adjusted for inflation.
With the successor model B77, introduced in 1977, the production of the A77 ended, but it is still considered one of the most iconic tape recorders in audio history.
The A77 was produced in over 186 different versions, making it one of the most versatile tape recorders of its time. One of the most striking innovations was the optional Dolby-B noise reduction, which allowed for a significant reduction in tape noise, thus delivering even clearer sound reproduction.
In addition, the device was equipped with balanced inputs and outputs, making it ideal for use in professional studios. Special model variants were also developed for institutional applications – including versions for the German Bundestag, the military, hospitals, and airports.
A particularly interesting version was the suitcase version of the A77, which enabled mobile use with built-in speakers. Music lovers could take their favorite recordings anywhere. Another highlight was the matching ReVox microphone 3377, made by Beyerdynamic, which offered excellent recording quality.
Due to its outstanding build quality and the use of durable components, many ReVox A77 devices are still functional today and deliver impressive sound. Especially among tape enthusiasts, the model enjoys cult status and is often still found in collections or in daily use.
The ReVox A77 was more than just a tape recorder – it was a piece of Swiss engineering that has thrilled generations of music and technology lovers. Those who own one appreciate its qualities.
