The Linotype

A milestone in printing history: the Linotype is regarded as the machine that industrialized letterpress printing. Developed at the end of the 19th century, it made it possible for the first time to cast entire lines of text ("Line o’ type") directly in lead, instead of setting each letter individually.

In doing so, the Linotype revolutionized typesetting and made newspapers, books and magazines possible on a large scale.

The demonstration

Swiss printing engineer Guy Flüeli (esig+) has carefully restored the historic Linotype from the 1920s and regularly brings it to life at the Enter Technikwelt. In the roughly one-hour demonstration you will experience up close how lines of text are formed from molten lead, and learn fascinating facts about the development of printing technology, from Gutenberg to the Linotype era.

No registration required. Participation included in the admission ticket.
