Printing history

Man of the Millennium, innovator, world-changer: Johannes Gutenberg is a figure of significance for an entire millennium — and for all humanity. With his invention of printing with movable type, around 1450 he revolutionized the media and cultural history of our planet.

Johannes Gutenberg's invention has literally shaped our world. The idea sounds so simple: instead of laboriously painting letter by letter in scriptoria until a book is copied, it is simply printed in large quantities using movable type.
